From
William Munter, Attorney At Law
I
am writing a book “The Greatest Generation of Maverick
County”.
The Greatest Generation was coined by Tom Brokaw that describes the
generation of Americans that grew-up in the Depression of 1929 and
subsequently went to serve in WWII. The National WWII museum
is
now open in New Orleans, LA. I attended the New Orleans
opening
ceremony November 6-7, 2009. I am a Charter member of the
museum. The museum is building a directory of WWII Veterans’
entitled “The Roll of Honor”.
I
am needing every Maverick County Veterans of WWII to submit to the
museum. The following are the Maverick County soldiers who
gave
their life during WWII. Some of these I know their background
and
some I do not. I would like to ask anyone who knows any
veteran's
history of Maverick County history to please email me the information
to: billmunter@sbcglobal.net
The
next list of veteran’s (approximately 400) of all veterans that served
in WWII. I will be writing a short history of each veteran as
my
project continues.

them. A quote from his little sister “One time I remember well it was
about 1955 and Charles came to our home at the Hydro Electric
Plant. He was so shook up, he was hysterical and for the first
few minutes we could not even understand him. Daddy finally got
him to calm down enough that Charles to us this story. During the
war I cannot remember where his lieutenant was shot so badly that he
was left for dead but Charles would not leave his body. Charles carried
the body for a long way until they came across medics. He had to
leave the body there so Charles could continue to fight. The day he
came to our house he had met that Lieutenant in Eagle Pass. He had
thought for about 10 years that his lieutenant was dead. I have
never seen a man cry like Charles cried that day and it was the only
time I ever saw Charles shed even one tear”. Charles suffered from
terrible migraine headaches after the war until he died on December 16,
1990. He always thought it was due to all the shrapnel he had in his
head.

Battalion, duty soldier, (Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central

from Herrera’s nephew Chief Tony Castaneda “My uncle developed a large
lump around his neck. I took him to several doctors in San Antonio for
treatment. We finally found a Jewish doctor. During his first initial
visit the doctor saw a tattoo on my uncle’s upper torso. He inquired
about it, my uncle for the very first time started telling of his
involvement in the war. My uncle mentioned that several members
of his unit agreed to tattoo themselves as a reminder of what they had
experienced and how lucky they had been to have survived the years of
fighting. My uncle mentioned that his unit liberated thousands of
people from one death camp, mainly Jewish people. They remained
there burying dead, feeding the hungry and providing the medical
attention to almost all of them (children and adults). The doctor and I
were so overcome with the tattoo explanation that this doctor called
another Jewish doctor and operated my uncle at no cost. My uncle was a
quiet and gentleman and I never muster enough strength for more
information”.
