Eagle Pass Alumni,
Attached
is the updated list of the Greatest Generation of Maverick County. Much
information was added from the last update, thanks to the Maverick
County Clerk's Office and Eagle Pass News Guide and many individual
Veterans and their families such as AJ Hausman, Ralph Hausman,
Holly Hausman, Dan Riskind, Corky Rubio, JR Rubio, Ricardo Daniel,
Enrique Esquivel, Jerry Rhodes, Ted Mendoza, Rudolfo Reyes, Mike
Hernandez, Rosalie Shannon, David Towns, Sylvia Sanchez, Chief of
Police Tony Casteneda, John Stockley, Jan De Wald, Barbara Downing,
Rodrigo Garcia, Pam Aguirre, Lety Gates Riojas, Ruthie Esparza and many
others.
Also,
if anyone has other information to add to any veteran on the list or
missing veterans, please contact me. I am also including pictures. It
has been very difficult to get the stories some of the veterans who
gave their lives in WW2. The families have moved away from Maverick
County or I am not sure where they are. If anyone has any information
about these veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice, please
e-mail me their stories or the whereabouts of their family. My
book is a work in progress. Also I am adding a chapter on Eagle Pass
Army Air Corp Base highlighting the 40 cadets who were killed in
training accidents, the Women’s Air Corp, Maverick County
folklore, Rio Grande Commandos, a German spy, and an escaped
German prisoner and much more. Thank-you,
Billy Munter

I
am writing a book “The Greatest Generation of Maverick
County”.
The Greatest Generation was coined by Tom Brokaw that describes the
generation of Americans that grew-up in the Depression of 1929 and
subsequently went to serve in WWII. The National WWII museum
is
now open in New Orleans, LA. I attended the New Orleans
opening
ceremony November 6-7, 2009. I am a Charter member of the
museum. The museum is building a directory of WWII Veterans’
entitled “The Roll of Honor”.
I
am needing every Maverick County Veterans of WWII to submit to the
museum. The following are the Maverick County soldiers who
gave
their life during WWII. Some of these I know their background
and
some I do not. I would like to ask anyone who knows any
veteran's
history of Maverick County history to please email me the information
to: billmunter@sbcglobal.net
The
next list of veteran’s (approximately 400) of all veterans that served
in WWII. I will be writing a short history of each veteran as
my
project continues.

victory ribbon. He fought at Iwo Gima and was in a fox hole where he
could see Mount Suribachi for many days. He was hurt unloading
ammunition and while in the hospital he made two bracelets with
drawings of Mount Suribachi on them. A quote from his little sister
“One time I remember well it was about 1955 and Charles came to our
home at the Hydro Electric Plant. He was so shook up, he was
hysterical and for the first few minutes we could not even understand
him. Daddy finally got him to calm down enough that Charles told
us this story. During the war I cannot remember where his
lieutenant was shot so badly that he was left for dead but Charles
would not leave his body. Charles carried the body for a long way until
they came across medics. He had to leave the body there so
Charles could continue to fight. The day he came to our house he had
met that Lieutenant in Eagle Pass. He had thought for about 10 years
that his lieutenant was dead. I have never seen a man cry like
Charles cried that day and it was the only time I ever saw Charles shed
even one tear”. Charles suffered from terrible migraine headaches after
the war until he died on December 16, 1990. Dr. Gates was always taking
shrapnel out of his head for many years. He always thought it was
due to all the shrapnel he had in his head”.

Battalion, duty soldier, (Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central

from Herrera’s nephew Chief Tony Castaneda of the Eagle Pass Police
Department “My uncle developed a large lump around his neck. I took him
to several doctors in San Antonio for treatment. We finally found a
doctor who happened to be Jewish. During his first initial visit the
doctor saw a tattoo on my uncle’s upper torso. He inquired about it, my
uncle for the very first time started telling of his involvement in the
war. My uncle mentioned that several members of his unit agreed
to tattoo themselves as a reminder of what they had experienced and how
lucky they had been to have survived the years of fighting. My uncle
mentioned that his unit liberated thousands of people from one death
camp, mainly Jewish people. They remained there burying dead,
feeding the hungry and providing the medical attention to almost all of
them (children and adults). The doctor and I were so overcome with the
tattoo explanation that this doctor called another Jewish doctor and
operated my uncle at no cost. My uncle was a quiet and gentleman and I
could never muster enough strength for more information”.
